OverviewFTP, or file transfer protocol, allows the user to access a server to upload, download, or modify files and folders. This is the main way that administrators install software and modify a website. FTP may be accessed through a browser, but standalone software is preferred because of their additional features and flexibility.Anonymous AccessUsers may or may not be prompted for identification upon initiating an FTP connection. Anonymous ID allows access to anyone but they will likely be limited to downloading only. An email address may be required for access (inputted into the user field) but the email isn't validated, and again rights are probably restricted to downloading.
Secure AccessMost server spaces that are not intended to be public file repositories will require a username and password. These accounts may be granted a variety of privileges ranging from downloading only to full administrator rights, or anything in between such as restriction from certain folders.
Connecting via FTPAccessing a server via FTP using standalone software is simple: type the destination's IP address or domain name, preceded by ftp:// instead of http://, into the address bar and hit enter. If the server requests identification, enter it. The root folder will then be shown. Depending on privileges, the user may now upload, download, or modify files and folders. For more detailed instructions on using particular FTP software, visit its vendor's website.
